Left to right:
Jacob, Sarah, Meagan, and Vivian.
The
Allen Public Library hosted the 2008 Aurora Images Art Studio
Student Art Expo in April.
This year’s exhibit showcased the artwork of 6 talented students
ranging in age from 6 to 15 years of age.
Raina, age 15, attends school at the Lowery Freshman Center. Not
only does she have a passion for art, she also has a passion for
reptiles and writing. One day, she hopes to take her menagerie of
reptiles to local schools on a teaching tour. She would also like to one
day be a published author. However, her greatest ambition at this time
is to attend art school in Europe. Raina attended her first formal art
lesson in June of 2007 at Aurora Images Art Studio. She completed her
first oil painting in September and then tackled a self portrait in oils
which she completed in November. Both paintings are included in this
year’s exhibit.
Meagan, age 12 attends public school in McKinney. Meagan loves
animals and wildlife. She prefers traditional art and realism over
abstract and contemporary art styles. She will not hesitate to tell you
that the palette knife technique is her least favorite. She plays
guitar, loves to read and enjoys horseback riding for pleasure. She
recently painted a mural of her quarter horse, “Pepso’s Little Nicker”,
on her bedroom wall. Meagan was elected by her peers to serve as the
Vice President of the Art Club at her school. She has had the honor of
receiving the “Panther Pathway to Success Award” three times this school
year and has recently been asked by her teacher to participate in the
upcoming UIL Art Competition.
Sarah, age 11 attends public school in Allen. After participating in
a city wide audition for 5th and 6th graders,
Sarah was selected to be a member of the 2007 Allen Honors Choir. As a
member of the Allen Honors Choir, Sarah was thrilled to have the
opportunity to perform with the Allen Philharmonic Symphony last
December. She loves art, singing and reading and she is a member of the
Environmental Club at school.
Vivian, age 7 also attends public school in Allen. Vivian is very
shy to speak about her own accomplishments. She understands and can
speak Mandarin. Her active schedule includes Ballet, Chinese Dance,
Piano and Art classes. She was also a member of the Chess Club at her
school last year. Vivian’s favorite subjects to paint are kitty cats.
Jacob, age 7 ½ is home schooled. He is a budding naturalist who can
tell you just about anything you want to know about butterflies and
snakes, but Jacob has a passion for airplanes. All types of airplanes.
He started taking private art classes so he could learn how to draw
airplanes from different angles. He has selected some of his earlier
works of art to exhibit next to his most recent renditions. His other
enjoyments include flying his remote controlled airplane and playing
recreational soccer. He is developing an interest in birds of prey and
plans to start taking birding field trips with his parents.
Rohith, age 6 attends public school in Plano and is the youngest
student at the Aurora Images Art Studio. His Mom Gayathri proudly tells
everyone that at age 3, Rohith was able to color within the lines. He
excels at Math and is interested in dance, music and vocals, but he is
especially interested in art.
This
year’s exhibit offered this amazing group of young artists the
opportunity to share a part of themselves with the Allen community.
Allen Artist Ken Byler selected each student’s “Best of
Show” and provided each student with a critique of their work.
Mr.
Byler has developed his own mixed media technique by combining acrylic,
watercolors, pen and ink, highlighters and marking pens in each of his
paintings. Sometimes he will even add oils. Some of his work is “Plein
Aire”, but most of his paintings are painted from pencil sketches,
Polaroid’s or his own memory. His paintings have been described as
having an Americana look with a “Grandpa Moses” style to them. “I was
flattered to be mentioned in the same sentence as Charlton Heston”, says
Ken, and “I wasn’t embarrassed when I was told that the comparison
wasn’t with Charlton, but with an elderly lady dubbed “Grandma Moses”. I
am told that she didn’t even start painting until just before the
paramedics arrived.” Kens work has won several awards and has sold well
in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Arkansas. He is a member of
the Boulder City Art Guild. His paintings are on exhibit at the
Reclamation Shop and Gallery in the historic Boulder Dam Hotel and
Orison’s Art Gallery in McKinney, Texas.
Also
on exhibit at the Library was the most recent works of art by
artist/instructor, Synne Magar Ferguson. For more information on
upcoming exhibits, contact Synne at the Aurora Images
